Parabole
Queen of the winos
Ellen sits enthroned
on her bundle of rags
wrapped in onion layers
but twice as pungent
she owns shop doorways
On warm summer evenings
we step over and around her
as if avoiding a landmine
On cold winter mornings
we avoid her altogether
when her fiery chilblains scald
and Ellen pisses on her feet
anointing them with a balm as
cooling as Mary Magdalene’s tears.
