Julia Thornley
Landscape
This land lies flat beneath a massive sky,
a snowstorm toy. A honey-coloured ship
is held in harbour, anchored safely on
a hill, and distant cooling towers dip
their toes along a river flowing strong.
That frail dictator sneaked away. He left
his tainted presence trailing through this place.
But over-salted roads and rain-washed skies
erased his trail, as liquid ice burns out
contaminated hate. Black shadows edged
with silver frost were chased by sun across
the earth. Now furrowed fields embrace pink skies,
and hawthorn hedgerows drenched to umber drip
with light, while slowly green unwraps new growth.
