In One of Those Model Towns
the sort that grow from handy
enthusiasm in private gardens
and open Sundays only from April
to October with entrance fees to charity
a child wandered amongst knee high
shops and houses, watched the trains
and stepped over the river to listen
to the church organ while trying
to read the fingernail gravestones.
She’d noticed the minute people
out shopping or sitting in the park
but paid particular attention
to the infant school playground
thronged with tiny games,
in five easy strides she was at the zoo
where she snatched the man-eating
tiger from his compound
and placed his snarling prowl down
amongst skipping and hide and seek games.
On the way home she idly thought
that the screams of minute infants
would be barely audible, maybe
something like the whine of a mosquito.
