Where the Rain Stops
From our hotel room, we see that the Victorian Garden,
Advertised as a particular feature, is closed for the season.
Still, apart from the pain in my gut, the bed’s
Soft and the antiqued lamp is enough to read by.
We arrive at the cathedral just as everything shuts down;
5.30 on the dot in provincial towns is the dark hour;
Lone bike riders rip home, women, carrying boxes of cakes, wait at bus stops,
Only tourists like us head down the lanes to the river.
We have travelled ten times as much since I retired,
Getting used to papers delivered to the door and full English breakfasts,
To tinkling manners and not talking loud,
To looking purposefully at a grey sky and remarking to the desk clerk,
‘Hope it holds’.
