Marjorie Mitchell
Today is Thursday
Today she is wearing her own skirt.
A shadow of recognition hovers, fades.
Around her legs wrinkled knee-highs
gather like corrugated bandages.
“Makes toiletting easier.” The young nurse lobs
this information to me, no pretence
at keeping dignity intact. Doing her job.
My shuffled words whisper into silence.
Chefs, tossing ingredients, flicker on the television.
A reversing truck beeps somewhere
outside. Through dull windows a beam of sun
tracks across the floor, beside her chair.
When I leave they give me her rings
to take home for safe keeping.
