Liz Atkin
Village
crossing the footbridge
above water like milkless tea
spouting down from the fells
I paused, leant and looked down
in that timeless way
to see lots of false teeth
both upper and lower sets
dislocated from jaw clamps
lying on the river bed,
stained grins and bites
rinsing and gargling
in the chattering flow.
In the village
I am watched
by slack mouths,
some stuck to window panes
like water snails,
only the children
run around me
biting the fresh air.
