Free Fall
I used to think, when scriptures spoke of sifting,
about a gentle process
shaking out the rougher stuff to leave
at last the best of me.
But lately I have read more closely: stones
and chaff are what must stay
behind while wholesomeness escapes and falls
towards the threshing floor.
I’ve been braced so long against this exit
rummaging in baggage
for what to jettison ahead of me.
Perhaps it’s time to yell
Geronimo and tumble, trusting nothing
here and just relying
on one ripcord and the wind to land me
near the big white cross.
