Foretaste
Night slices a slot of light
as you cut in, kitchen door ajar.
Mind beats still; how that rough-hacked,
lichen-grey owl draped the dark.
Mothering words rattle night moss
from your hair, "What kept you?"
Only a gash in the hot tar crust
of that wrecked tennis court
and late May's fleshy carnival
of blossom, the whine of flies.
