Gary Allen
Fear
When my father
thought he was going to die
he spent every evening
in the back bedroom
looking over the photos
of his dead brothers
and sisters
the young man grinning
in his army uniform
to whom not even war
meant death.
Hearing the laughter
in the sitting-room below
he ran downstairs
pulled the plug
on the television
took the fuse
out of the electric-box
and sat with us in the dark
only the sound
of a car passing
and the breath of the living.
