Leaving Home
A thousand miles from home
the road runs out
at the end of the bus route.
I walk the rest
towards the peach and orange suburbs,
passing one-eyed sunstruck dogs,
syringes like crucifixes,
and cracked heads of melons
bleeding in the dirt.
Marcello is polishing the espresso machine
in the empty bar
at the bottom corner of my block.
In return for millions
he gives me a double edged key.
Under spyhole scrutiny on each floor,
a rickety grilled cage
hauls me up the building’s spine
to a knockerless double door
- CASA DOLCE CASA bristles
my neighbour’s mat.
Like mine? I wonder, seeing the brass bed,
chandelier overhead;
a kitchenette designed for eating out;
a dyptich of the owner’s parents
when the world was black and white;
a window onto walls of shuttered silence,
and another with a tall ancient wardrobe
blocking out the light.
