Dreamdust
So. In some country or other.
He was grinding crass metal
In spitting shrapnels of steel
And the sweetbacon smell of sweated bodies.
And a ritual glance out of an oilsprayed window.
Bisecting the frame the flat line of road.
And through zigzagging haze two parasolled figures
Gliding above it like porcelain lovers.
He watched the smaller. Delicate, stillmovimg.
His gaze had left the machine too long.
A mere brush across his thumb was all he felt
As iron jagged a hole above the bone
And blood drummed on an obscene floor.
His fist bound in a filthed rag
The lathe slowed to match his hands
His mind raced around the universe of her.
Startled, he ran free of the darkness.
Arms flailing he whirled through the shaking air.
Thinking he saw the girl turn to him
He hovered on a wall of heat.
Floated to his knees.
Long after he had exhausted thought
He stood, unblinking.
A sound, behind, Khamed
(it may have been his name)
Touched quietly the injured hand.
