Intimated
One morning when the world had not yet crossed my ego,
I and he went for a drive, the two of us who were not a pair,
leaving the others to sleep.
I can’t remember where we went.
It was early spring, tarmac-sleet dark;
nothing stirred on the long wept roads
save the usual patrol dogs padding the oily mist.
I can’t tell you the words. Our voices
spoke and wheeled, spinning tales,
scaling far where the camber rose and fell.
It was Sunday, not our country or our car,
and the unproven border fleshed red and green.
