Eucalyptus Tree
Under the eucalyptus tree sat the sun,
the grass burnt with the smell of peaches and Turkish Delight,
threw its smoke over the tree until the branches caught fire.
At that moment my thoughts shrivelled on a single stem,
dangled limp like a mouse hung up by its tail.
The odour was of a damp alley, of dog’s urine.
In that instance up the long steps of time
from childhood to old age the tree had disappeared,
the sun, a man’s brass penny on the ground,
the overall nothingness of what was left.
In the evening where the tree had stood, I became
the sound that buzzed with the bees and drew away.
Tomorrow the same tree will rise from nowhere
in the searching, looking for the day or time that was.
