I couldn’t understand
the blackboard letters
or the sense in being
snatched from home
sentenced to an institution
filed with stumbling children
mentally impaired
I couldn’t escape
the day the doctor came
so signed the papers
for conditional release
at sixteen I could read
between the lines
snip-and-tie
don’t run the race
I cannot bear
my childless marriage
endless trying
still unable
even to adopt
I close my eyes
I’d only needed glasses
