What is real?
The catalogue tries to pin him down
commenting on the impossibility of his locations,
how such a view is no longer there
due to dense residential development.
The author notes the excellence of plumbing,
questions the angle he viewed her bathing
incandescent in her grotto of colour,
her golden liquid tomb.
In his afternoons there is a veiled halfness
of exits, entrances glimpsed.
A visitor approaches the doorway
through brilliant roses, grey cypresses.
Inside, cat curled, dog contented,
a once touched cup, half eaten meal,
greengages glowing with promise,
lay abandoned in rooms oozing perfume.
Dark and mysterious
light and dazzling all at the same time
the paintings entice, tantalise
while Bonnard, string vested
magician of warmth and colour,
peers at the bathroom mirror -
a cold bespectacled face
embarrassed by his reality.
