Stations of a Lesser Cross
When the last flame
Flickers
In the improbable bonfire,
And the full moon
Lifts off
Over the thatched roof;
When Dives and Lazarus
Plays
On Classic FM,
And the children
Hush
To a bedtime fable;
When orange blossom
Scents out
The midnight garden,
And stars pinpoint
Our provisional knowledge:
Have we come at last
To an unlikely Paradise,
The serenity of seeing
Beyond false expectation? -
To what is,
And only can be?
