Hide and Seek
Slow eyed and dark haired
tonight she sits so still
no pain will find her.
Sees jam smashed
against the wall
again sees jam
smashed against the wall.
Where her father works
fruit falls off lorries
and she cannot say
'No'
When bananas appear;
for breakfast, for dinner, for tea;
anyway oranges were worse.
If you move the blows will find you.
And you little worm
who do you think you are
leaves her with no voice.
Just be so still.
No one will find her
hiding in her clothes
at the bottom of the bed.
