Floor
I thought I had finished
but when I closed my eyes
I saw the flagstones, worn, flecked,
shining slightly with a bloom of damp
from the earth they were laid directly on.
Over lifetimes they have taken their shape
from the boots and shoes that walked in dirt
through the dairy and down to the cellar
where hams were cured, game was hung
and the water in winter was waist-high.
If you live in a house built over a spring
is the floor more or less reliable?
