Anschluss
Now the beggar has become Emperor,
Takes in his hand the spear of destiny,
The millennial blood of history;
Takes, at last, command of the pure future.
Let us say something in the nature of
Satisfaction brings a smile to that face
Where once was penniless and grey disgrace;
King of Vienna, not its obscure slave.
Now for two thousand days the world will burn,
And flesh no longer come soft to the touch
Till the coldest panzer jaws of this Reich reach
The longest river, the highest mountain.
Christ dies again, nailed to a crooked cross
And crowds along the Ringstrasse hail the new
Tiberius. Tonight there is no snow,
The air is cold, the stars like shattered glass.
