Roof
Under the roof is where the cat goes
when it wants to die, where everything
we used to be has drifted, like shed skin,
upwards on the draughts that will come in
though we’ve locked the doors, sealed the walls and
windows.
I’ve climbed the ladder to cower in the loft
among the surfboards, sledges, discarded books,
the sheets of insulation flapping from the rafters;
closing my eyes, I wait in nervy darkness,
for an ungentle, giant hand to raise the roof.
