Ambit

About Ambit

Ambit was started in in London in 1959 by Dr. Martin Bax and it continues to be a 96 page, perfect bound, quartetly of the best new poems, stories and contemporary art. In August 2013 Dr Bax retired and Ambit appointed a new editor, Briony Bax.

We print emerging writers alongside the most recent or more experimental work of established writers - our alumni ranges in fiction from William Burroughs to Jonathan Lethem and in poetry from Fleur Adcock to Peter Porter and Judy Brown.

The late J G Ballard, whose condensed novels first appeared in Ambit in the 1960s, was our fiction editor for many years and Carol Ann Duffy cast her eyes over the poetry for a time.

Eduardo Paolozzi and David Hockney had their art published in Ambit during the formative periods of their careers and pictures still keep coming from Ralph Steadman, Posy Simmonds and Sir Peter Blake.

We do not publish criticism, essays, articles or reviews because we like to give as much space as possible to the work itself, leaving you to make up your mind about what you like and what you don't. Ambit is never dull, and always gets a reaction; as Carol Ann Duffy says, 'Ambit continues to surprise, exasperate and delight.'

Ambit is, and has been, such an integral part of the arts scene that our back issues have become collector's items. We hope you enjoy browsing the Ambit archives on this Poetry Library website. If you're tempted to subscribe, details follow. If, having got a feel for the style of the magazine, you'd like to submit material for publication, please see our author's guidelines below.

Submissions

Author's guidelines
AMBIT magazine has been publishing contemporary poetry and short fiction since 1959 and has always welcomed unsolicited material. We strongly advise you to familiarize yourself with the magazine before submitting. As our editorial staff has recently changed we suggest you look at issues 214 and above for our new style.

Please note that we now prefer to accept all submissions via our on-line submissions portal accessed from the website www.ambitmagazine.co.uk

Due to the amount of submissions we receive we now have two windows for accepting work, these are Feb 1st-April 1st and Sept 1st- Nov 1st each year.  Submissions received at any other time will not be read until the windows open.  Submissions received via email and not through our Submittable portal will automatically be deleted. If you do not have email postal submissions are accepted but are subject to the same windows as the on-line submissions.

The poetry editors are Liz Berry and Declan Ryan aided by George Jackson. We publish a wide range of poets and are probably regarded as eclectic in our tastes. Please send a selection of about 5 poems.

The fiction editors are Kate Pemberton aided by Gary Budden and Mike Smith. We will consider stories of up to 5000 words in length but only one story at a time please.

Our art editors are Olivia Bax and Jean-Philippe Dordolo and you can send examples of artwork to them via Submittable but not in the post.

Payment to contributors
AMBIT is a non-profit making magazine but we believe in paying for work so everyone gets something! Please see our website at www.ambitmagazine.co.uk for complete payment terms in the Submissions section.

Warning!
Please note our two reading periods. This is due to the enormous amount of work we receive and our pledge to read everything that comes our way.  If it takes us a while to get back to you please understand.
