Pictures from an Old Suitcase
Woman and Man
She runs towards him,
clutching her jacket tight,
while the daisies she has picked
scatter in a chain of delight.
Even in black and white her face is flushed.
Her head is turned from him, modesty
forbidding too obvious a pleasure.
Only a fool would love a soldier.
In days he will be gone,
to march across murdering fields,
but she cannot help her joy.
My mother's cousin – friend?
I have no idea.
Her story haunts me,
though I shall never know its end.
