Pictures from an Old Suitcase
Airman in Front of a Pyramid
'Lew in Egypt, 1942'
For once I have a date, a name:
the brother they both adored,
the only one to go off to fight –
though in a pay tent behind the lines.
Thin, bank-clerk legs
bronzed in baggy uniform shorts,
he looks happy,
fitter than in any peacetime pose.
For him war meant opportunity,
to travel, to write,
to make his pilgrimage to holy places
heard of in chapel. This is no portrait of a hero,
just a snap of an ordinary man
learning to endure other people's politics,
and for an hour or so
having the time of his life.
