Pictures from an Old Suitcase
Twins
They are caught unexpectedly,
eyes wide to camera,
inclined to giggle, but wary.
In those days, twins were an oddity,
butt of too many well-meaning jokes.
One wears her father's postman cap.
Though I am daughter and niece
even I cannot tell which is which.
In my childhood they were identical
still, but different, positive and negative.
It was not always so.
Before the winds of experience
flipped their lives about,
negative and positive made one whole.
So which is which here?
If only one of them had added a caption,
identifying self from other self. As it is,
I do not know my inheritance.
