Ricochet
And now, I am on the mirror's other
Side, he thought, after having passed
Seamlessly through its glass. The way a kiss
Transfers from one mouth's small dark
To another's like a note, a flame. But this
Feeling was new to him. Waiting in the car
For school to let out, in a rain
Whose rivulets on the windshield cast
Everything as tremulous, even his old place
Around the corner seemed unfamiliar.
On the other side: last night, again,
He couldn't shake the dream in which a
Camera, as the shutter's closing, falls apart
In his hands – not a bad or good
Feeling, just different. He could see that the area
Around his life had cleared some, as if through grace,
As if the constant ricochet of hurt
Had paused. And now, he was on the other side.
