Keuka Lake
Over what can be understood from this
Scene, the way a film of smoke
Smears the evening sky, or how the ding
Of a buoy marks the water's
Closeness, shrieks from a party
Slapping from the other side of the lake – over
All this, a thin tissue's laid
Each summer upon returning, making the days
The same yet very different. After a nap
On the porch, everything's suddenly been
Switched: one's lover has vanished
From the dock, where her six-year-old's now sprawled
Reading off a big page blank
From sun. There are bats darting between
The twin pines. Later, the car's headlights
Will wash over the hills' vineyards searching for
Deer, just as always. And just as
Before, the daughter will dream of half a piece of string
That must be found, that's urgently needed
To complete the other half. Where
Is it, she'll lament from her troubled slumber.
