Missing
The world is full of missing persons.
In small moments, between what's taken
Back and what's not, they go
Away to become shadows, former
People in a rainy landscape.
We may see them driving past
A corner, or they may live another
Lifetime away. The person they were
Has ceased – it's as if the soul has left
Its body empty, hollow as a slight
Smudge of cloud. It's their numbers
That stay. We use them to count
Their absences around a small black
Table through a rupture in cigarette
Smoke, or while reading under a lone
Telephone pole at dusk.
You can understand how it happens.
Someone loses touch, moves
Away, and details fade – loves,
Deaths, weddings. And then it's then.
