Gathering
Then a weight like sadness falls on your
Shoulders. Elsewhere a just-divorced man
Sifts through pebbles and leaves on a bare
Hill looking for shattered remains
Of a bomber downed years ago. Gathering,
He calls it, the way you collect
What can be seen through windows on a winding
Lane, open to the night: dollhouses, intact,
Staring back from above mirrored
Floorboards and glass in picture frames. A bit
Of leather, shell casings, even charred
Hunks of cookies turn up. What each lit
House reminds you of, is how much sticks around
Long after any human error
Is uncovered. A wedding ring's cleaned
So that the dashes between the year
And month and day reappear, like in fog
Rubbed from a pane. Along the curb, joggers lug
Their black Labs. A sharp wind flows freely.
