I
I always think of you
on rainy days
too much sun
beach weather
troubled you
– climate for infidels
you’d say
when the cold came
it was worse
you hardly moved
you grew
a little smaller
and then it rained
the trees swelled up
the hills
seen from the window
resembled camels asleep
all that you had to see
holding your gaze beyond
the window sill
you looked and looked
until your breath fogged you out
and thus you stayed
and I´ve kept you
a fading mezzotint against the glass
a flood of things
come to mind
IV
the fortune teller
turned up the jack of spades
and said
a prince for you
you gave her in return
guava preserve
the sunset
went indigo
later there was
a story to do with ships
a tango
on the verandah
of the colonial house
an intense glow
grew pale in the palm grove
now you watch the tv soaps
your prince
fears the damp
no longer rides out to hunt
during the ads
you mollify your sauces in the kitchen
behind the spice-rack
you keep
a playing card
