from Winter Jouney
20
I went to look and saw it was a fox
like the one that leaped across the road.
It waited outstretched on the porch
where the neutered cat sleeps out its days
indifferent to the libertarian life
yawning from a surfeit of tinned meat. The fox was calling so I had to go.
I gave the cat its usual meal
and the porch became the jungle
the road became the sea the red fox the bus
that never comes or has just gone
and always needs the right fare ready. So it seems that the moral of the story
hovers between fox and cat
in a protest against public transport
though after all the road has overflowed
the jungle has no way out and no way back
and everyone who travels is alone.
