The English Girl
It’s spring.
I’ve brought you here
to make a judgement.
Will you step inside
when rain breaks
from relentless cloud
or let the droplets
settle, like jewels,
in your hair?
Is the stillness
an uneasiness or a chance
to listen to the pulse of morning?
Too soon the darkness.
No words trespass our thoughts
as you look at me,
fix your eyes on my guilt,
leave me wondering
if I’ve already failed the test.
