Spinster
(of this, or any other, parish)
You call me an ‘old maid’
with heavy handed jocularity.
I listen to the mockery
you make, unthinking, of my singleness
and I would like to rail or weep
if only at your blindness.
Where are your eyes?
Dear God, I have such long years to be old
if I have reached it now
and maid I’ll never be again
no matter what you think or say
you don’t know half the story.
Why don’t you look, and see the woman
who has loved and wept and bled
like any other, why don’t you see
the strength of independence
instead of just the empty space beside me
and keep your bloody pity to yourself.
