Overwhelmed, Provisionally
Gloomy. But the space is vaster.
Fewer people. Does the footpath in its darkness
lead towards a truer solitude?
Maybe it’s at this age, in this place,
the paths divide?Gloomy hours, days, weeks. Thus
on the plain of childhood, the waters
very smooth and very silent. Black. The heart
tired from running. With steps slower
and almost regular, the heart
draws us silently towards night’s fullness.It no longer desires. No longer leaps. Or kicks up.
But in a low voice, in the dark breeze,
goes on singing. A slow,
forward-moving horizontal song,
no grinding or grimacing, no cries.Time to sleep. Must we for now
await the return of a riper dawn
to get down to a regular task?
Or must we yet,
must we really and truly,
go down to the shores
of the high subterranean waters?
