The Moment
I remember the place, the hour, the moment.
Smells, sights, hush of the elements.
Mute intoxication, slow-imbibing oneness.
That silvery-gold disc, sailing
in the azure ocean of night;
our guiding star, a few paces ahead,
for comfort, pleasure and privacy.
We set sail, to unknown islands,
the enclosure of safety;
the wooden ridge, the oars, grip of your
knuckles,
carving moon-passage, descending ripples.
Parting waves as loving as mother’s arms.
The serenity of the Ganges
matched by the stillness of night;
punctuated by knowing, being
in the moment, alone, together.
I was ready to sail anywhere,
any number of uncharted oceans.
Half-way across the sacred river,
you turned the boat around.
Premonition hung in the air.
River flowed on.
Moon looked on.
Caravans passed.
We never made the shore.
Night sighed, stars flickered.
Moon paled, we parted.
