Lantern
Tamp down thick snow.
Plant a stump of candle.
Round it build a snowball dome.
Shelter a fizz of match flame
from the thinnest breeze,
bring it down pale
blaze to sooty wick.
The sky is mud, a sieve
of mirky snow that shifts
and twists. The damp
weight of cuffs rasps
timid wrists. Dusk.
Place the last cold apple
on the snowhut roof.
The snow lamp’s soundless
glow completes the silence.
Between clamped globes
lie hoarded beads.
Thin spars of light
touch braes and glens,
finger-deep, inches long.
