Generations
From what you do not say
to my appeal – towards
the lost word
there is a shadow
visible and invisible
precise and impossible
missing and present.
From your memory
to my forgetfulness – towards
the lost country
there is a shadow
which measures the extent
and the limit
of our light.
Alain Suied, poet, essayist and translator, was born in Tunis. When he was eight years old, his family moved to Paris. He published his first collection of poems, Le Silence, at the age of nineteen, and some fourteen volumes since then, including La lumière de l’origine (Granit, 1987), which was awarded the Verlaine Prize of the Académie Française. He is well known in France as a translator of American and English poetry, including the work of Dylan Thomas, Keats, Blake and Pound, and for his critical essays on poets ranging from Heine to Celan.
Steve Light has published works on philosophy, two volumes of poems, and Somewhere between Philosophy and Music: Lyrico-critical essays on Poetic Modernity. He translates from French and Italian; excerpts from his version of Sergio Solmi’s Meditazioni sullo Scorpione appeared in MPT 9.
