1816
The lieutenant longs for the old beacons.
How can he read the terrible messages
through fog, sea-grey around flaps
opening and closing on shutter frames,
however huge?
How can he spell out
attack while mist makes a second alphabet?
Bonfires used to burn through haze:
one, a French approach, two, really coming,
four blazing bales, a great force.
He dreams of arms against thick air,
swinging amongst steaming words,
of semaphore
while the shutter soldiers
of Cabbage Hill and Portsmouth cook,
tidy their hammocks.
It is the peace.
