Maiden name
In the yard of Crowther Station
bags of aggregate stand by
a concrete mixer. We stall here
for minutes. Wooden ribs of panelling
hine from the waiting room,
light on, door locked with chains.
Up in the control room, somebody
peers out of the window. My name
means minstrel, violin-player,
poet even, and I shall keep it.
The landscape here is spired and turreted,
doors are giant slabs of mahogany,
windows cross-hatched panes
instead of the plain glass I looked through
as if it was not wall while I grew up
unaware that history sticks
even to new towns with new names.
