Waiting
for the cream and green 76 bus
when he was working late
for his letter from Egypt,
his dodgy-back
cricket-in-the-sand
coming-home scrawl
for the demob lorry
under the bridge
at Westbury
with the four-year-old son
a pram and baby daughter
in a queue
for dried eggs
a quarter of whalesteak
to put the kettle on
when the six o’clock train
whistled at Grange Court
on hand, foot and finger
with his toast and tea
before athletics
or Hughie Green
when his back played up again
and nothing ever got done
after her stroke
for a word or smile,
arranged tidily
in the blue armchair
in a shed
on a shelf
above coffins
in a glass jar
labelled by the undertaker
D. Carden (Mrs) deceased 11/93
to be scattered
on May Hill or his beloved Malverns
or in Blaisdon churchyard
when he decided.
