Inspired By Anna
We didn’t use your name at first
You weren’t quite Anna then it seemed.
Thus “baby-girl” and “little-one”
Because we assumed you’d just begun
A journey. A life-long unfolding
From your violent, needful beginning
Always and only onwards.
We gave names to our household pets too
And called them such straight away.
Because animals don’t travel far,
They’re born, grow quickly, then just are.
Living contingent lives. Pitched in daily
With inner tides but rudderless really
Drifting, windblown, here and there.
So easy to make these judgements.
We’ve come a long way from
Namelessness to pre-eminence
Through God, selection or something else
Entirely. Yet now I feel as small
As you. Huddled in the face of it all.
Conscious, but hardly moving.
