For many years your tiny seed lay
deep in darkest earth, unmoved, unmoving,
waiting for the signal
that monitors the miracle of growth -
seed becoming shoot
that pushes with astounding strength
through stiff clay
to where rain falls and sunshine beams for you.
First certain things must happen -
Coulter of a plough digs just that little deeper,
hoists up your amazing atom,
killer powder misses your lucky patch
Chance -
Random happening -
Your turn now!
Raise the green fuse!
Grow persistently!
Unfurl your frail and petalled hat
triumphantly in poppy red!
