Mari Lwyd
Mari Lwyd
Pedar gwaith,
Trystiad, cryglyd,
Llwybr ceffyl
Lllwyrffedu
Ysgarmesiad
Enllibus:
Tafod y march
Bod a gwynt
Y ganwyll ganddo
Neu arno,
Anhyfodd,
Cilwenwr,
Yn gellweirus,
Marlewyrch
Hust!
Yn ddisymmwth
Esgyrndy
Dilais
Mae yn llawn bryd
Ymadaw werithian:
Tyred,
Dos i'th daith
Mari Lwyd
Four times
the horse path,
pissed,
raucously, rattling
skirmishing
libellous
horse-tongue
reeking of
lamp-oil
tough to please
snickerer
joking
dead light
Hush!
suddenly
it's high time
to be going.
Voiceless
bone house
come,
take your journey
poetrymagazines' note: The Welsh ceremony of the Mari Lwyd or Grey Mari, (Mare), is a ceremony where a totem of a horse’s skull is carried from house to house on the last night of the year in a mock-rite involving singers and poets trying to gain access to homes for food and drink. The Mari embodies the combined energies of fertility and memories of the dead at the threshold of the new year. (Written in Welsh & English)
