Pointless
When you leave the room, though it seems empty
and cold suddenly, the way it can, the weather
notwithstanding, and so pointless I
wind down like a mechanical clock, every breath
another second slower, and everyone bores me,
most of all the ones with souls who sweat,
rubbing their two sticks so hard with no hope of fire
I can taste eternity, it isn’t death.
When you show up I don’t come alive
Coppelia-like, all six senses spluttering
like the kettle in the morning and, shuddering
like a girl at the pictures at the scary part,
leap across the room in emulation of
my heart my heart my heart my heart my heart.
Liane Strauss’ poems have appeared in various magazines here and in the USA. A selection of her work is included in the forthcoming anthology, The Like Of It (Baring and Rogerson 2005).
