Dusk At Crummackdale
Mushrooms appear suddenly here, crowding
from earth's shadows, insidious as the moon's
hushed face looming over Pendle.
Sun strikes against a horseshoe of rock;
the cliff glints in its dull fire, smoking
back the sky's blue as a vapour of dusk light.
Wind bends back the grasses with cold,
the beck soothes a mutter of pebbles,
a gull circles and falls lower in the sky.
Three hares ghost out from the gateway.
One stands to watch me, upright as a man;
the night's whispers startle its ears.
Partridges whirr in a coven of wings,
heading for the meadow's seam with sky
where that faint wall stitches it.
Rabbits spill out from hedgerows,
sprawling across the only road out of here;
the moon rises, shedding the spores of stars.
Through bitter grass, mushrooms hatch themselves,
their white heads blissful, their pink gills
blessing my hand's iniquity.
