Going to the Stone
Heaven quietens.
Darkness is visible.
There is panic
In the flatting of crows.
A new wind soughs,
Slumbering eyelids lift;
The stone tilts and purls
To the sea's pale steeds.
Unable to walk it had been
Carried, and chanted into place
East of the Griddle Ring.
Balanced with a priestly
Sleight of hand and mind,
It held the seat of government.
Only the wind could move it --
The wind or human guilt.
As the torque of gold
Round a judge's neck
Was felt to tighten
At truth kept dark
Under the palm's lid,
So the stone would
Cradle and rock
At the approach of the shuffling heart.
Now fallen, idle on the floor
Of the vanishing ocean --
The end of man's adultery with stone.
All around the earth groans,
Wearied of its tholing.
From heart to heart
Runs the desperate call:
Ruat coelum -- let the heavens fall.
