From her
I took leave and some change :
Before the grocer’s
There’s a book-magazine shop
So I went in.One by one
I looked at the covers of many books :
In the end exchanged the change
For an old favourite
By a favourite poet.Reading these poems
I became hypnotised
As if I’d become a poem myself.
Where I was
Who I was
I couldn’t tell
Didn’t even try to.Cannon Street Road in London
Became, precisely, Green Road in Dhaka
And through Green Road I was returning home.
I was walking while reading,
Reading while walking.
When I came to the last line
Of the last poem, my eyes rose :
In front – Limehouse Library
And my house just round the corner.Only then did I remember the shopping list :
There was no mention of poetry,
Only haldi, fish, paan etc.I stopped reading
And began to search
Search for the real poetry.What will I say in answer
When she asks me
“What did you bring from the grocer’s”
