Furnishings
He held the chair of falling down,
Saying there is no life on the moon
But there is furniture...
He settled on a chaise-longue by Tycho Brahe,
He lolled on a settle in the Ocean of Storms,
He loafed on an ottoman by the Carpathians
Knowing how chairs were arguments
Against gravity, that finding the latent
Staircase in the cliff of oneself
Always means a moment of falling,
Of walking backwards, of finding
Gods in cushions, struts, upholstery...
So in the armchairs of the Lake of Dreams,
On the footstools of Copernicus he sat
In the lap of the ghosts of astronauts,
Sharing a prie-dieu with the shadow of Pythagoras,
Little-finger-balancing chesterfields in Seething Bay
With the Earth overhead in its hammock of soot,
“This now is a place as well,” he said,
Arranging hepplewhites for a parliament of dust,
“Where people end, furniture begins.”
