She presents herself shining
with unbroken expectation
borrows coffee and honey
glows with a northern light
that skims the cheekbone
takes residence in the eye.
She is translated, shakes
hands with the president
began early, diversifies
is accepted by return
asked for more, given dates
always wins first prize.
She has wintered remote
an island warden
with the birds and the sea
far enough from men
who were less than life-size
and tried to set her back.
She presents herself shining
in the still sunlit kitchen
rising silver from the lake
with unspoken expectation
I could never meet
a grain of honey on her cheek
