Snail in Moonlight
My best loved house
was under a different coat of arms that night.
Someone else’s photos on the window-sill,
bedrooms renamed.
We moved from the place grandfather built -
bricks made with sand from the beach -
to a flat on the corner
near dad’s office, a good school.
On my last evening, in the moonlight
I saw a snail make its way towards the gate,
then a shooting star travelling the other way.
I wonder, after all, if it was the house that moved:
slow progress down the years.
