The Likeness
Whoever sent it must have known his name.
The envelope was waiting when he came.
A folded likeness fell into his lap.
Well, said his father, aren’t you the lucky chap?
Mother knew how keepsakes go astray.
She put it in a drawer before she went away.
When he searched for it it wasn’t there.
His father wept because the dust was everywhere.
He found it later but he didn’t tell.
He even found the faded envelope as well.
Two had been company and three a crowd.
He took as much time as their likenesses allowed,
Then did his bounden duty right and meet.
A box stood waiting at the corner of the street.
